EU-ToxRisk: a paradigm shift in toxicological testing

Duration: 1 Jan 2016 - 31 Dec 2021

EU-ToxRisk’s goal is to define the complex chain of events that link chemical exposure to toxic outcome and deliver testing strategies that enable the reliable, animal-free safety assessment of chemicals. It is the largest programme in toxicology ever funded by the EU, with 39 partner organisations across the European continent and integrating advancements in cell biology, omics technologies, systems biology and computational modelling.

Edelweiss Connect is responsible for development of the knowledge infrastructure that allows this mega-project to function. Coordinator Professor Bob Van de Water explains the challenges involved. “In EU-ToxRisk, we are leading 10 case studies with different partners in different disciplines, all generating their own data which, at some point, should be in the common domain. Edelweiss Connect has developed a structured, linked database where we store all biostudies in a way that is efficient for the workflow and how we use datasets generated in the project.”
